02 Whale Watching Samana

The Highlight from mid-January to the end of March

The starting and ending point of all excursions is Santa Barbara de Samana, Dominican Republic.
But we can also pick you up in Las Galeras, El Portillo and Las Terrenas!

From January to the end of March about 2-3000 humpback whales come to the bay of Samana to raise their young and mate again. Watching the sea giants jumping and diving up close will be an unforgettable experience for you!

After the whale inspection it goes still to the following stay to the Cayo Levantado, the so-called Bacardi island. There you can eat and drink according to your needs (not included in the excursion price). Souvenir stalls and the possibility of a massage are also available.

In order to protect the giants of the oceans, whale researchers, in collaboration with the Navy (Medio Ambiente), have drawn up some rules of conduct which are naturally observed by our captains. Small boats must keep a distance of 30 mtr, larger boats a distance of 50 mtr to the whale. A maximum of 3 boats are allowed to approach the whale group. If further boats are in waiting position, the first boats must leave the place after 20 minutes. The motors of the whale group must run at least with standing gas, so that a sonar sound is perceptible for the whales. Every boat must have a valid license to go whale watching. We often see that there are curious whales that shorten the safety distance. Then it is allowed to stay with the whale.

Day trip (departure and return by arrangement)
Price per person from Samana $70 (min. 4 persons)
This excursion is also possible for 2-3 persons for an extra charge.
